Bank Shot Trainer: Learn the Diamond System by Playing

There are a dozen diamond-system calculators online that will tell you where a bank should go. None of them make you better at banks, because banks are not solved by arithmetic — they are calibrated by reps. The system gives you a first approximation; the table tells you the correction. This drill is built around exactly that loop: predict, shoot, measure the gap, adjust.

Why this drill works

A bank has three inputs: the angle in, the speed, and the spin. Beginners try to learn all three at once and learn none of them. This drill freezes two — centre ball, one medium speed — so the only variable is your read of the angle. Once your centre-ball banks are calibrated, speed and english become deliberate adjustments instead of noise.

The two reads: mirror and diamonds

The mirror. Picture an identical table reflected beyond the cushion you are banking off, and in it, the reflected image of your target pocket. Aim the object ball straight at that imaginary pocket. This is geometrically exact for a ball rolling without spin at moderate speed, and it is the fastest read for cross-side and cross-corner banks.

The diamonds. The rail diamonds turn the mirror into numbers: a ball hitting the cushion two diamonds from the pocket, at equal angle, rebounds two diamonds out on the other side — equal in, equal out. Count the diamond where your object ball meets the rail, and you can name where it will cross the table before you shoot. That called line is the whole point of the drill: a bank you did not call teaches you nothing even when it drops.

Set it up on a real table

Cross-side to start: put the object ball a hand-span off the second diamond of the long rail, level with the side pocket on the far side. Cue ball a diamond behind it, slight angle. Call the far side pocket, read the mirror, shoot centre ball at medium speed. Ten reps, count your makes, then move the object ball one diamond down the rail and repeat. Graduate to cross-corner, then to long one-rail banks up the table.

How to run it

  1. Call the pocket. Out loud or in your head — but before you bend down. No called pocket, no rep.
  2. Read the mirror. Reflect the target pocket across the banking cushion and find the line from the object ball to that reflected pocket.
  3. Confirm with the diamonds. Name the diamond where the ball will meet the rail and the line it should rebound along. Equal in, equal out at medium speed.
  4. Shoot centre ball, medium speed. No sidespin yet. A firm hit shortens the rebound angle, a soft roll lengthens it — which is exactly why the speed stays fixed while you calibrate.
  5. Measure the miss. Watch where the ball actually crosses the rebound line versus your call. Long or short, that gap is your table’s personality — cushions, cloth and humidity all move it. Adjust the next call, not your stroke.
  6. Log ten reps per line. Make-percentage per position is the score. Move one diamond and start the next set.

Scoring and benchmarks

Out of 10 per position: 3 is a fair start — banks are genuinely hard; 5 wins bar games; 7+ on cross-sides means you should be shooting banks in matches on purpose, not as escapes. Keep separate numbers for cross-side, cross-corner and long-rail banks; they decay independently.
